SHAKESPEAREAN SONNETS

Estándar

Can you believe it? This is the last post of this course! Yeah!! You’ve done it!

In order to prove you have one of the most incredible minds on Earth you will be asked to translate poetry (no kidding) into English.

Read very carefully this sonnet by Shakespeare translated into Galician by Ramón Gutiérrez Izquierdo and remember that a Shakespearean or English sonnet consists of 14 lines, each line containing ten syllables and written in iambic pentameter, in which a pattern of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable is repeated five times. The rhyme scheme in a Shakespearean sonnet is 1st stanza (a-b-a-b), 2nd stanza (c-d-c-d), 3rd stanza (e-f-e-f), g-g (the last two lines are a rhyming couplet).

JUST TRY IT!!

Como un actor mediocre que sobre o escenario

esquece, asustado, as liñas que recita,

ou como un ser salvaxe polo ardor levado,

que o corazón con tanto empuxe debilita;

así eu, inseguro, non digo porque esquezo,

a fórmula exacta do rito amoroso;

por tal razón semella que cede o meu afecto,

lastrado polo peso de amor tan poderoso.

Que a mirada miña me sirva de elocuencia,

e sexa mudo heraldo do que o meu peito sente,

que polo amor suplique e busque recompensa,

mellor do que o faría a voz máis elocuente.

Aprende a ler o escrito polo amor calado:

oír cos ollos sabe o amor máis refinado

  10. Here you can read the original sonnet written by Shakespeare:

    As an unperfect actor on the stage,
    Who with his fear is put besides his part,
    Or some fierce thing replete with too much rage,
    Whose strength’s abundance weakens his own heart;

    So I, for fear or trust, forget to say
    The perfect ceremony of love’s rite,
    And in mine own love’s strength seem to decay,
    O’ercharged with burden of mine own love’s might.

    O let my books be then the eloquence
    And dumb presagers of my speaking breast,
    Who plead for love, and look for recompense,
    More than than tongue that more hath more expressed,

    O learn to read what silent love harth writ;
    To hear with eyes belongs to love’s fine wit.
